Named after the river that runs through it, ‘Sur Geres’ is located in the north of the Charente-Maritime region of France, at an equal distance from Saint Jean d’Angely, La Rochelle, Rochefort and Niort. The area where Surgeres now sits has been occupied since the Neolithic Age, but it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that Surgeres is mentioned as a community.
Surgeres Rail Station is on the TER Poitou-Carentes line as well as the TGV Atlantique line from La Rochelle to Montparnasse. Connections on the TGV line to Paris depart and arrive several times a day. There are also various local trains that make the other cities surrounding Surgeres convenient to get to.
In the 10th century, the city began to grow as fortifications were built to protect it from tumultuous times, and this was also when the city’s landmark of the Notre Dame Romanesque church was built. Today Surgeres is an important region for agriculture and the countryside and temperate climate is beautiful enough to keep visitors to the area happy.
Getting to Surgeres is easily done by rental car, as the city is well connected to both regional cities and the capital city, Paris. The region surrounding Surgeres is not well served by regular buses, so the best way to explore is by rental car.
