Skopelos lies towards the east of mainland Greece and is the second-largest of the Sporades group of islands. Although it does not have too many sandy beaches, Skopelos is the perfect destination for visitors looking for a tranquil and quiet holiday. Accommodation on the island is targeted towards the upmarket tourist. It is relatively expensive when compared with that on the more commercialized nearby island of Skiathos.

Stafylos is the island’s most popular beach. It is quite well-liked by families due to its proximity to Skopelos Town, which is about 4 kilometers away. From the road above the beach, there is a stupendous view over the bay. Agnondas is a charming little fishing harbour with many taverns offering excellent seafood at modest prices. The most beautiful beach on the island is Limnonari. It is a magnificent stretch of pearl-white sand with clear turquoise waters. There is a bus that runs along the main road to bring visitors to most of the major beaches of the island. Many can only be reached by walking an extra distance along a dirt road.

Skopelos Town is a lovely slope dotted by white houses with red roofs. Along the water’s front is where you will find most of the fine restaurants, bars, and shops. Behind the water’s front is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets that weave their way up to a 13th century Venetian Kastro. There are an endless number of monasteries and churches to visit here. The most visited of these are Zoodochos Pigi, known for its icon dedicated to St.Luke, and Chrisso, which is famous for its breathtaking interior.

Because Skopelos is quite big, it is recommended that you rent a car if you want to explore some of the more remote beaches and hidden valleys on the island. Skopelos is easily reached on a daily basis by ferry, hydrofoil, or catamaran from Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the mainland.
