Skiathos is an island just off the eastern coast of mainland Greece that is part of the Sporades Islands. Skiathos has a large number of beaches that cater to a variety of tastes. Koukonaries, with its seemingly unending stretch of sand, is one of the island’s more famous beaches. It has many taverns, beach bars, and water sport facilities. On the northern part of the island, Lalaria Beach is a secluded pebble beach with aquamarine waters that is only reachable by boat.

In Skiathos Town, the main centre of the island, there are a number of interesting things to do and see. Chora is filled with charming narrow streets that wind through beautiful old buildings. Bourtzi, a tiny peninsula that separates the harbour into two parts, was once a Venetian fortress. You can watch concerts and open-air theatre in the neoclassical building situated there.

For those who intend to do a little shopping, most of the shops can be found on Papadiamantis Street. Here, you can find many things to take home including souvenirs and leather goods. The island’s busy nightlife is centred on the Disco Strip at the end of the new harbour and Polytechniou Street, with its many small bars.

For scenic excursions by rental car, you can visit some of the enchanting monasteries outside the town centre. The Evangelistra Monastery was completed in 1806 and was a shelter for fighters in Greece’s War of Independence. The Kounistra Monastery was built in honour of the swinging icon of the Virgin Mary, which a monk found hanging from a tree in the 17th century. To enter both monasteries, women must wear long skirts and long-sleeved shirts, while men are asked to wear long trousers.

Skiathos has an airport with many local flights flying in daily from Athens. There are also daily ferryboat and hydrofoil services from Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the mainland.
