Car Hire Skafidia - Mini guide to Skafidia
Olympia, Greece, is the site where the ancient Olympic Games were born. It is located in the north-western end of the Peloponnese Peninsula, about 200 kilometers east of Athens. Because of its important archaeological site and ruins, Olympia is a very popular tourist destination. It can easily be reached by hired car or bus from Athens.
The most famous temple in the sanctuary of ancient Olympia is the Temple of Zeus, which was built in the 5th century as a dedication to the father of Gods. Equally famous is the stadium, which was the legendary location of the very first Olympic Games in 776 BC. Although there remains little to be seen of the impressive buildings from the ancient times, it is easy to navigate through this archaeological site. The paths are clear of vegetation and there are plenty of trees that provide shade throughout the day.
Olympia village itself is home to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, one of the most renowned museums in the country. It has a fantastic collection of prehistoric treasures found by the excavations of the ancient sanctuary. You can also find a number of restaurants, cafes, shops, and a tourist office here.
For those who intend to undertake some short trips by rental car, there are some other interesting things to see near Olympia. The well-preserved Temple of Epikourios Apollo in the nearby town of Nea Figali dates back to around 420 BC. About 35 kilometers away, a large seaside resort called the Aldemar Olympian Village can be found in the scenic village of Skafidia.
