Mini guide to Sicily

With heavenly beaches, majestic mountains, golden orchids and lush forests, Sicily has everything to offer. This island is also rich in art, history and folklore, and has a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural society. It’s also famous for the intriguing legend of the Mafiosa.

Agrigento is located on a plateau overlooking Sicily's southern coast. It is a small medieval city with the Romanesque Gothic cathedral in the historical centre. In the Valley of the Temples are the ruins of numerous temples as well as necropoli houses and streets, a small amphitheatre, several auditoria and a fine archeological museum.

Catania is an important city in Sicily and has two Roman amphitheatres and Ursino Castle, located in Piazza Federico di Svevia, which used to be a coastal fortress before volcanic eruptions extended the coastline.

Cefalu is one of the Mediterranean’s undiscovered jewels being a stunning seaside town set beneath the Madonie mountain. It has a beach, narrow medieval streets, and delightful restaurants overlooking a rocky coast. This coastal town also boasts one of southern Europe’s greatest churches, the Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral. Atop the mountain are the ruins of a large fortress and an ancient Sicanian-Greek temple, the Temple of Diana.

Trapani offers spectacular views of some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful sunsets due to its western location. The Annunciation Sanctuary was built in the fourteenth century in the Romanesque Gothic style and still retains some splendid medieval elements. The adjacent Pepoli Regional Museum has medieval and modern collections. It houses some ancient finds as well as craft and folk work rarely seen in other museums. The Romanesque Gothic Church of Sant'Agostino is located in Piazzetta Saturno famous for its beautiful rose window.

Favignana, located 17 km southwest of Trapani, is the largest of the Egidean Islands - known for their tuna fishing and now famous as beach resorts.

The Lipari Islands are a volcanic archipelago visible from Sicily's eastern Tyrrhenian coast. The principal islands are Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Stromboli, Panarea and Vulcano. Here you'll find beautiful scenery, volcanoes, castles, thermal resorts, water sports, good fishing and picturesque beaches.
