Located in the Bourgogne region of northern France, Sens is a quaint town on the banks of the Yonne and the Vanne rivers. About 40 miles southeast of Paris, Sens is famous for its religious history, with the Sens Cathedral being one of the major attractions of the town.

Sens has a history dating back to the Romans, who named it Senones. It was never a major administrative or military centre, but the town still has the tell-tale geometric Roman street layout today. During the Middle Ages the town became more significant and the buildings and churches built during this period are what draws visitors.

The Sens Cathedral, or Cathedral of St. Etienne (Saint Stephen), is the major attraction. Built as one of the first Gothic cathedrals in France by the Roman Catholics, it is a popular attraction for both locals and visitors. Construction began in the 1140s but the cathedral was not completed until the 16th century. Although not known for its architectural beauty, the cathedral is a homage to Gothic architecture and does boast beautiful stained glass windows.

Other attractions include the Archbishop’s Palace, the Church of St. Maurice and the House of Abraham. Sens is a sleepy little town and many visitors enjoy simply strolling along the small streets and enjoying local eateries.

With less than 30,000 residents, Sens is easily explored on foot. Public transportation is pretty much limited to buses, which are by no means tailored to visitors’ routes.
