Just nine miles south of Nürnberg is the scenic town of Schwabach which is full of beautiful half-timbered houses as well as a town church with a late gothic exterior that has some interesting features including an approximately 13 meter high tabernacle dating back to around 1505 and an altar dating back to 1508.

Recently renovated in 2002, Schwabach’s City Hall is a popular tourist site to see German building design at its finest. The Hall, or Golden Hall as a part of it is known, sits nearby to the central market place and is the focal point for the whole city with a rich history behind it for the tourist seeking a little culture. There are displays on how the hall was built and decorated using 1,400 sheets of gold leaf and how it was all nearly destroyed in a devastating fire of 1975. But due to donations from the citizens of Schwabacher the renovations were made and this Golden Hall was restored to its former glory.

Those looking to find other historical sites, would be pleased to find the Jewish synagogue down the locally named ‘Synagogue Alley’. The Jewish suffered terribly during the Second World War and this building is, out of respect, still used, but is now a People’s University, a place of learning in a modest but still rich setting. Renovations continue, but the building is still viewable to the public and is well worth the visit.

Only a few minutes drive from the city centre, there is the idyllic city park of Schwavacher. What was once a cattle pasture has been redesigned as a recreational park, with a swan pond, duck feeding facilities and many paths for those who like walking as well as a music pavilion for summer musical events.
