Car Hire Santiago International Airport - Mini guide to Santiago International Airport
Santiago International Airport, also known as Cibao International Airport is located in Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city of the Dominican Republic. It has the most modern facilities of any airport within the Dominican Republic.
Santiago is known for its many restaurants and vibrant nightlife, but there are also many other interesting places to visit on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
Puerto Plata, the name means Silver Port in Spanish, is a popular tourist destination for those seeking relaxation. The Coral Marien Beach Resort and Spa is one of the newest all-inclusive resorts in the area. The complex includes a swimming pool, a sports bar, restaurants, a miniature golf course and water sports on its private beach. It is possible to spend an entire holiday within the resort but a tour or visit to downtown Puerto Plata is an interesting excursion. Puerto Plata is famous for its charming Victorian architecture. A tour of the Brugal Rum Factory allows visitors to see rum being made and to sample some of the factory’s wares. The Amber museum has many exhibits; Puerto Plata being one of the few areas in the world where amber naturally occurs and this museum shows many items of amber and other gemstones. Finally a cable car trip to the top of Mount Isabel Torres provides wonderful views of the area and at the top is the botanical garden.
Cabarete is a seaside resort that attracts windsurfers and others seeking a more adventurous holiday. The surf in this area is much rougher than it is in other parts of the Dominican Republic and this makes it ideal for windsurfing, boogey-boarding and surfing. If you have never tried any of these activities before there are local companies who provide lessons. The Iguana Mama Tours that depart from Cabarete offer a variety of adventurous activities including hiking, mountain biking and ecotourism trips.
For travelling within cities a car is not necessary because the bus service in the Dominican Republic is generally cheap and reliable. However, if you intend to travel between towns or explore the coast then car hire is available at the airport. It is best to pre-book with an international car rental company or choose a reputable local firm such as Honda or Nelly.
