Car Hire in Saint Raphael - Mini guide to Saint Raphael
Saint Raphael
This historic city dates back to Roman times, when it was a peaceful holiday resort for rich families. This sense of calm was short lived however, with the Barbarians sacking and capturing the city before later being defeated by the Saracens.
It was in 1799 when the town was rediscovered and redeveloped. Napoleon landed at the small harbour on the beach and the town’s status began to grow rapidly. Much of the town is today made up of large, modern apartment blocks, hotels and resorts although the old town still retains much of its charm.
Saint Raphael offers much of the same attractions as every other Côte d'Azur resort, although at a fraction of the price. Affordable accommodation has ensured the resort’s position as one of the richest towns in the area.
The new town is divided by a railway line with the old town being located inside the tracks. It is here where you will find buildings dating back centuries. You will also find a 12th century church, relics of a Roman aqueduct, a museum of underwater archaeology and a quaint local market.
Take a trip to the promenade from where you can access the gorgeous beach as well as a number of statues dedicated to one of Saint Raphael’s 19th century mayors, Félix Martin. You will find a pyramid remembering Napoleon’s discovery of the town by the old port.
There are many restaurants with seafood being a focus on the menus. If it is frenetic nightlife you are after, you won’t find it here. There are a few low-key bars and an excellent casino, but this family destination’s evening entertainment focus is largely on dining out.
Saint Raphael is a beautiful town which is best explored on foot. If you want to travel around the area to visit other nearby resorts, your best mode of transport is a hire car. For the best rates on the market, book Saint Raphael car hire online and rest easy that a suitable vehicle will be available when you arrive.
