The Charente-Maritime department of western central France is the home of the coastal community of Saint-Georges-d’Oléron. Originally named Charente-Inférieure, Charente-Maritime was one of the eighty-three original French departments that were created by as a result of the French Revolution in March of 1790. It was renamed in September of 1941.
