The Romans were well known for their city planning as well as their roads. Many ancient Roman roads still exist in one form or another, including the Via Flaminia. Constructed in 220 B.C. by Gaius Flaminius, Via Flaminia was the most important trade route to the north of Rome. When staying in central Rome’s Flaminia district, many visitors enjoy following this trunk road to the sea which allows them to explore Italy.
This long and very straight road begins at the Comitium, at the front of the Senate and exits the city at the Milvian Bridge before heading north to Narni and the Adriatic Sea. While the ancient road is only available for walking groups, some visitors to Italy prefer following its long path by car. Inexpensive car hire is available in Flaminia.
While the remains of Via Flaminia consist of rare patches of pavement, with the longest stretch found at Rignano Flaminio in northern Lazio. Remains of many of the ancient bridges constructed for this route can be found on each of the road’s branches. Between Rome and Narni, remains can be found at: Ponte Molle, Pile di Augusto, Ponte Sanguinaro S of Narni and the great bridge at Narni.
At Narni, the Via Flaminia split into two branches, an eastern and a western. To explore the western route, plan a journey that calls on Sangemini, Acquasparta, the church of St. Giovanni de Butris and Cavallara. On the eastern branch, remains are scare, only being found at Spoleto and Pontebari.
St Giovanni Profiamma was the location where the branches rejoined to head for the sea. Remains can be found at: Pieve Fanonica, Nocera Umbra, Fossato di Vico, Costacciaro, Villa Scirca, Cantiano and Cagli.
