Today, Fiumicino is undergoing a series of renovations which have been taking place since the early 1970s when it became obvious that Rome's air traffic was going to continue to increase dramatically. Even more growth is expected within the coming years. As of now, the airport consists of three main terminals and one satellite terminal linked to the international terminal in an innovative way. The number of gates for domestic and international are split almost evenly with Terminal A serving domestic destinations, Terminal B serving those traveling both domestically and internationally, and Terminal C which handles international flights exclusively. The satellite terminal is linked to Terminal C in order to make transfers easier on international travelers. The development of this terminal was part of the renovations which updated Fiumicino Airport.

A ""skybridge"" connects the satellite terminal to Terminal C to provide maximum comfort to most of Fiumicino's international travelers. There are still three gates one must bus to. The Skybridge is an automated rail shuttle, rather than the glassed-in walk-way the name may conjure up. There are plans to extend this shuttle to the rest of the airport, but as renovations are still taking place in other parts of Fiumicino, it may be a certain amount of time before domestic travelers can make use of their own Skybridge.

The satellite is connected to Terminal C by the ""Skybridge"" automated rail shuttle, the first of its kind in Italy, and there are plans to extend the service to the rest of the airport.
