Car Hire Paris - Mini guide to Paris
The romance and grandeur of Paris has attracted people for centuries. First time visitors marvel at the grand boulevards and famous landmarks, while others return again and again to appreciate its distinctive character, fine museums and excellent food.
The avenue des Champs-Élysées is a good place to start a walking tour, starting outside the world class Musée du Louvre originally a fort, but a museum since 1793 and home to the diminutive Mona Lisa. The avenue passes beneath the stately Arc de Triomphe and ends in the financial district, in front of the odd-looking Grande Arche de la Defense (a skyscraper with a hole in it!).
Behind the Louvre is the strangely inside-out Centre Georges Pompidou, consisting of several galleries and museums that draw the crowds. Not far from here is the oldest part of Paris, the Ile de la Cite, two islands with excellent medieval architecture and the pride of Paris, the cathedral of Notre Dame, a Gothic masterpiece dating from the 12th century. The church of Sainte Chapelle nearby is also unbelievable.
In the Jewish quarter youll find the famous Sorbonne; it was here that the 68 riots began, and it has a distinctive character. A stroll along the River Seine is a romantic experience. The charming pedestrian Pont Neuf is Paris oldest bridge. Keep following the river westward to reach the huge Musée d'Orsay, and further on, the esplanade des Invalides and Hotel National des Invalides - Paris greatest single complex of museums, including the Musée de l'Armée and Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération.
Some of the best views of the city are seen from the top of the Eiffel Tower, originally built temporarily for the World Fair of 1889, it is a must-see Parisian icon, best photographed from the steps of the Trocadero (nearest Metro station).
Another great view is from the charming hilltop suburb of Montmarte, famous for its charming and peaceful artist-filled square, quirky cafes, Dali Museum and outstanding Disney-like Basilica Sacre Coeur. At its foot is the notorious, slightly dated, Moulin Rouge (in the red light district).
By car you can explore and visit the Bois de Boulogne, EuroDisney and the Château de Versailles.
