Car Hire Oldbury - Mini guide to Oldbury
The town of Oldbury lies in the heart of the Kent Weald, a landscape of rolling hills and wooded valleys, orchards and vineyards, splendid castles, gardens and many historic houses.
The most popular attraction in Oldbury is the park on Oldbury Hill. This delightful area of mixed woodland incorporates a huge Iron Age fort built sometime between 150 and 50 BC. There are excellent circular walks in the vicinity, with interpretation material on site.
Although there arent too many sights to speak of in the town itself, there are a couple of historic attractions in neighbouring Ightham village that are well worth a visit. Ightham Mote is a superb moated manor house nestled in a sunken valley and dating from 1330. The beautiful St. Peter's Church and its adjacent cemetery of crooked headstones date from the 16th century.
A short drive west on the A25 takes you to the historic town of Sevenoaks, where many people come to visit the immense baronial estate of Knole. Knole House was transformed into a palace in 1456 by Archbishop Thomas Bourchier, for himself and succeeding archbishops of Canterbury. Intriguingly, it was designed to numerically match the calendar with 7 courtyards, 52 staircases and 365 rooms.
Oldbury is easily accessible by car. From London, follow the M25 south to Sevenoaks, and then head east on A25 for a few miles until you reach Oldbury. Oldburys proximity to London means that you are spoiled for choice if arriving by air at one of the many international airports in the Greater London area. The closest train station to Oldbury is Borough Green, just east of Ightham Village. Trains to and from Londons Victoria Station leave at least hourly (duration 45 minutes).
