Chiclana is located about 6kms from the coast and 28kms from Cadiz. The landscape inland is rolling and partly wooded. Along the coastline, you will see pine trees and woodland.

The river Iro flows through the town and on one bank is a mosaic-tiled promenade leading up to a bandstand. Typical of this Andalucian area of Spain, you will find many characteristic narrow streets and courtyards.

The Town Hall Square is at the centre of the town and is where you will find a vibrant, covered market. The locals come in from the rural areas and set-up their tables to sell produce, including bunches of herbs, asparagus and snails. All other produce for daily life is sold, including meat and fish. Tuesday is the normal day for the outdoor market, which is held by the Blue Bridge near the river.

Chiclana is well known for its furniture production and many large shops can be found selling this product.

Gourmets and wine buffs will love this town. The local dish is Berza Chiclanera, which is salted pork, cooked with chickpeas, marrow, sweet potato, green beans, beef and chorizo. Seafood and fish are caught along the Bay of Cadiz and in the surrounding salt marshes. The best-known catch in the area is the king prawn of Chiclana.

Try to go along and enjoy the local festivals, where you will see and hear flamenco dancing and singing, bullfighting and other local customs. The Feria is held on 16th June, the burning of traditional figures is on 23rd June and the fishermen’s procession on 16th July and will give you a taste of local life.
