The highlight of a tour of the city is the ancient town centre and its important historical heritage. Representative of this is the magnificent Maison Carre, which was built in 5 AD and is the best-preserved Roman edifice in Nimes. Adjacent is the 1st century Roman amphitheatre, another impressively preserved piece of ancient history. The Arena was transformed into a fortress during the Middle Ages and has featured prominently in all stages of the town’s history, being a kind of ‘instant’ walled town in times of warfare. Thanks to restoration efforts, it is still being used for various events throughout the year.
Elsewhere in the town, you will come across the fabulous Temple of Diana, the extensive Castellum reservoir, the massive gates of Porte d’Arles and Porte de France, as well as numerous old squares, all dating back to the time of the Roman Empire.
Strolling through the narrow streets, lanes and squares is a pleasant and relaxing way to spend a quiet morning or afternoon, while, in the evening, sample the many excellent restaurants, quality cafes and charming bars.
Nearby, along the Nimes coast, are picturesque vineyards and the spectacular fortified town of St Louis, which affords magnificent views of the Mediterranean. For more ancient architecture, try the golden stone houses of Uzes and Pont du Gard. Nature lovers can head for Camargue, with its flamingos and gypsies, or to the hills, valleys and hamlets of the Cevennes.
