Muenster Airport

The Muenster Airport, or Flughafen Munster/Osnabrück Airport, is the forth largest international commercial airport located in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is situated at about 25 km from Münster and at 40 km from Osnabrück in the village of Greven. The airport offers its services for around 6 million people living in the northern Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Basin), southern Lower Saxony, Emsland, parts of the Netherlands (Euregio) and Westphalia.

The airport is at present working on expanding the runway to 3,600 meters (11,800 ft) hoping to attract many more intercontinental flights. The plan was the focus of protests raised from environmentalists, because the expansion of the airport would damage the Eltingmuhlenbach natural area, however, the plan was approved in the year 2004. In the first phase, the runway will be extended to 3,000 meters (9,850 ft) which will cost around 60 million Euros. The expansion is expected to be finished in the year 2008.

The cities of Münster and Greven and the Steinfurt district plan to contribute an area of around 500 acres (2 square kilometres) to the airport for airport-related commercial activities. This was met with protests yet again from the environmentalists, because this plan would result in the removal of the Huttruper Heide heath. Other plans include linking the airport with the Bundesautobahn.
