Mini guide to Moenchengladbach
MönchengladbachMönchengladbach is a city located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated west of the Rhine halfway between Düsseldorf and the Dutch border.
The real name of the city was Gladbach, which is still used to this day by some people residing in the town. To differentiate the town from another town of the same name it took the name München-Gladbach in the year 1888. This spelling could mislead people to think that Gladbach was a part of Munich and as a result the name was changed to Mönchen Gladbach in year 1950 and Mönchengladbach in 1960.
The origin of the town was an abbey founded in the year 974. It was given the name after the Gladbach, a narrow brook that runs subterraneously today. The abbey and adjoining villages emerged as a town in the 14th century. Nearby the town of Rheydt was situated, which is today included in Mönchengladbach.
Mönchengladbach is home of the famous football club Borussia Mönchengladbach, formula one race car drivers Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and the philosopher Hans Jonas was born here.
Mönchengladbach has summer temperatures ranging from 35 degrees Celsius to 43 degrees Celsius and mild winds. This makes it the perfect place for travellers to rest and enjoy the sights, especially during the months of spring. You can book into Dorint Park hotel, Holiday Inn or the Plazzo hotel for the best holiday relaxation.
