Mini guide to Meppen
MeppenMeppen is located in the German state of Lower Saxony, in the Emsland district. It is found at the merging of three rivers – the Ems, Hase, Nordradde and Dortmund-Ems canal (DEK). The name Meppen comes from the German ‘Mappe’, meaning Delta, or ‘mouth’ in old German (the town is found at the mouth of several rivers, after all!). The motto of the town is ‘City in the Country, City on the Water’.
Meppen is makde up of seven quarters and 13 villages, and was first mentioned in 834. In 945 and 946, Emperor Otto the Great granted the town rights to collect tolls, mint coins and hold a market. In 1360 it was granted rights to build fortifications, and over the next 300 years it was built up as a fortified city. Many of these walls were destroyed during the 7 Years’ War, although some are still visible today.
In the Old Town is located the historic City Hall, and church. Twice a week a pedestrian market is held, and on the banks of the river Ems is a campsite. As with many old towns, Meppen has a rich array of old churches, and these should not be missed while touring the town. Call in and see some of these historic old buildings – the churches of Saint Vitus, Saint Paul and Saint Mary of the Peace are among them.
From May to September is held the open air theatre, where 30,000 visitors each year are entertained in the natural theatre that can be found in the forest outside town. Each production boasts over 100 workers – both on the stage and behind it – and many large pieces of equipment can be housed in the large outdoor theatre.
There are many other historic places and buildings that must be visited in Meppen – the Men’s Mill, a mill by the river, is now used for events but dates back to the 1500s. The Höltingmühle was an old Dutch windmill, and is believed to have been constructed in the mid-1600s. It is now home to a coffee shop and hosts many civic receptions during the year.
