S’Algar is part of the Sant Lluis district in southeast Minorca. It has developed in a quiet corner of the island but is just 6 miles from the airport.
Visitors are drawn to S’Algar by the excellent sports facilities for windsurfing, tennis and horse riding, which are all available at the club Hipic Es Beoret. Elsewhere there are seven bowling greens and hiring woods is not difficult.
To add to the variety of activities available, the aerodrome in San Lluis offers leisure flights over the island and flying lessons. The airfield also has a karting track and a bar/restaurant. Next-door is a hippodrome where pony-trotting races are held each weekend.
It is acknowledged that the resort does not have a good beach. To escape from the strip of sand that has been brought in and deposited outside one of the hotels involves a fifteen-minute walk to Cala Alcaufar, a picturesque cove with fishermen’s cottages and a small beach, which is safe for children.
The annual fiesta in San Lluis takes place over the weekend closest to the 25th August. Among other things, it consists of a parade of floats, along with a number of sports and musical events for people to participate in.
Placa de sa Creu in San Lluis is the site of the local market that is held on Monday and Wednesday mornings, in order to avoid the heat of the day.
Mahon, as well as being a cultural and historical centre, is home to the famous Xoriguer gin factory that is located by the harbour. Admission is free and a range of gins, produced in the factory, can be tasted.
