Melville Hall Airport is on the northeast coast of Dominica, near Marigot. It is one of only two airports that serve the island, the other being Canefield near Roseau. The Melville Hall area was chosen for the airport as it was one of the few areas on the island to offer an expansive area of flat land. The airport was opened on 22nd November, 1961. The airport is about one and a half hour’s drive from the capital, Roseau and about one hour from the second-largest city, Portsmouth.

Dominca has been nicknamed ‘the Nature Isle of the Caribbean’ because of its natural beauty. The island has many beautiful lush rainforests that are home to many very rare species of plants, birds and animals.

Dominca has some famous attractions one of which is the Indian River in Portsmouth. This mangrove-lined river flows into the Glanville Swamp and is the ideal place for bird-watching. The river is a mix of salt and freshwater and is dominated by the Butressed Bwa Mang trees. Visitors can take trips along the river in a paddle boat, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will point out the local fauna and flora.

The Cabrits National Park is an 18th century garrison which was abandoned as a military post in 1854. Over time the forest has encroached on the garrison. In 1982 a partial restoration of the main fort, Fort Shirley, was carried out. The ruins of the batteries and the Commandant’s House are still standing.

Car rentals are available at the airport and should be booked in advance. Hiring a car is the best way of touring the island and is less expensive than using taxis. It is advisable to have your own transport if you are going to some of the less accessible trails as, although local guides will accompany you on the hike, they will not take you to the start of the trail.
