Before you take off for the day to explore this fascinating island be sure and stop at the Visitors Centre and pick up the Lahaina Historical Guide.
There are many activities and things to see in West Maui to keep you busy. In the nearby town of Lahaina you can see the famous Banyan Tree which sits in the courthouse square. It was brought from India when it was eight full tall. It is now 50 feet high and 200 feet wide. It was planted here in Lahaina to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Christian mission. Crafts shows, meetings and under such entertainment usually consider this the centre point of town. It would be a tree climbing kids dream.
Lahaina used to be an old whaling town and still houses a Harbour that has daily departures for tourists who enjoy parasailing, whale watching, snorkelling, and dinner cruises. It also ferries visitors to the nearby island of Molokai and Lanai.
The attractions of Lahania include art galleries, exquisite restaurants, many shops and art galleries.
The beaches and parks on the west side of Maui are Honokao'o Beach, Mokule'ia Bay, D.T. Black Rock is a large lava rock that divides the beach in half; it also has strong currents but is excellent for snorkelling. Large turtle and rays can often be spotted in the waters of Black Rock.
Another place you will want to visit is the Statue of the great Buddha. It is the largest Buddha statue outside of Japan and stands 12 feet high and weighs three and a half tons. In 1967 and 1968 it was cast in Kyoto, Japan and is made of bronze and copper. The great Buddha and the Temple Bell were finished in June 1968. It represented the commemoration of the Centennial Celebration for the first japans immigrants arrival in Hawaii.
Be careful where you park while you are visiting because there is a 3 hour limit during the daytime.
