Mini guide to Marl
MarlMarl is a town and municipality found in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the district of Recklinghausen. It was first mentioned in 890, and the name was originally ‘Meronhlare’, in German, ‘swampy grazing or pasture land near a pond’. It was then found in Benedictine Monastery records as Marlar, Maerl, Marler and finally Marl.
In the district of Old Marl is found the Church of Saint George, from the 11th century. A local family, the Loe family, were patrons of the church from 1419 to 1830. The church was renovated in 1856-59, with the foundations from the old tower as a base for the building.
The Loe family in 1111 built a castle on an island – and it became known as ‘Strevelsoe’, then as ‘House of Loe’ from 1359. Indeed, the Loe family were very well-to-do, owning many mills, farms and other properties. They owned a mill in Old Marl, the Sickingmühle. Today, the castle grounds are home to a gym and sporting fields.
Between the years of 1111 and 1803, Marl was simply a village church with no mayor – only a village and municipal head. Then, power went to the Duke of Marl Arenburg, from 1810 to 1813. Under occupation by the French, it was run by Grand Duchy of Berg, and then the Prussians ran in until 1816 when it was given to the district of Recklinghausen.
The Auguste Victoria Colliery was founded in 1898, and is today owned by Föderstandorten Deutsche Steinkohle AG. In 1905 came about the Brassert Mine; today it is a city office and studio, although some of the colliery is preserved. The Chemical Works Huels Ltd were founded in 1938, and are today known as Chemistry Marl. The city nowadays makes its money from mining and chemical manhfacturing.
