Car Hire Mansfield - Mini guide to Mansfield
Mansfield lies sixteen miles north of Nottingham, in the centre of Sherwood Forest. This small market-town in Nottinghamshire, central England, is predominantly a coal district, with manufactures of hosiery, shoes, and metal products.
The Visitors' Centre at the Sherwood Forest Country Park is the best place from which to see the ancient forest. The famous 'Major Oak' can be found here as well as a further 450 acres of forest to stroll around. There are special events, such as archery, held at the site throughout the summer and the Robin Hood Festival is staged here every year.
Mansfield is a small market town with few pretensions to importance, but it has taken part in the history of the country, especially religiously speaking. Mansfield's parish church is called steeple house. The parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul, at the bottom of Church Street, is the oldest and most important church in the town, dating back to Saxon times. Mansfield museum is also worth a visit.
Mansfield has plenty to offer in entertainment. The refurbished Palace Theatre hosts dance, drama, and classical music performances. The modern Odeon Multiplex Cinema is situated off Nottingham Road. The centre of town is largely pedestrianised with over 90 outlets for high street shopping and financial services. There are chain stores and supermarkets, as well as large markets with over 230 stalls offering something for everyone.
The peaceful charm of Nottinghamshire, with its gently rolling fields and quiet woodlands, and the beautiful city of Nottingham are ideal to explore from Mansfield. The Creswell Crags run along the valley of the Millwood Brook, near Clowne. Hidden among the rocky precipices are a series of caves, famous for their legendary connections with medieval forest outlaws. Robin Hood's Cave is where the famous fugitive is said to have found safety.
Trains leave from Mansfield Woodhouse station every half hour, to St Pancras station in London (duration 3 hours). All trains go via Nottingham.
East Midlands Airport is the closest airport to Mansfield with flights to all major UK destinations. The Airport is easily accessible from all parts of the UK, either by road or by public transport.
