The Philippines capital is known for its friendly people, excellent nightlife, historical sites and nearby scenic countryside, making it a cheap an appealing holiday destination.

For an insight into the history of the city, spend some time wandering around the old 16th century Spanish capital of Intramuros. While now in ruins, it still creates an authentic colonial atmosphere with its plazas, Governor's Palace, fifteen churches and six monasteries. The highlights of these are the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Casa Manila, and the impressive ruins of Fort Santiago. Another interesting old part of the city for strolling is Binondo, or Chinatown, with its 17th century Binondo Church, Quiapo Church and Quiapo district.

Other main attractions in the city include the ornate Malacañang Palace, now permanently associated with the self-indulgence of the Marcos family. It includes the Malacañang Museu; Rizal Park, with its Planetarium, Rizal Memorial, and Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion; the National Museum of the Philippines, and the National Museum of the Filipino People.

Manila has a host of luxurious accommodation, fine cuisine, excellent cafes and exciting nightlife. In particular, the streets around the suburbs of Malate and Makati form the main entertainment districts.

Nearby is the expanse of Manila Bay, which affords panoramic views of the South China Sea. Toast the sunsets from the harbour wall and take in the Metropolitan Museum, and the Manila Hotel, where General Douglas MacArthur once made his home. For an interesting excursion further afield, take a trip to the spectacular volcanic crater of Lake Taal, south of Manila.

Manila International Airport has direct links to most Asian cities, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Shuttle services into the city are frequent and reliable.
