Mini guide to Malmö
Sweden is a large, geographically varied and strangely little-known country whose sense of space is one of its best features. And Malmö is no exception, an historic west coast port rivaling Gothenburg and Helsingborg.
The old city of Malmö is surrounded by a system of canals criss-crossed by bridges. The city center offers a continental mix of old and new. Shops, restaurants, hotels and places of entertainment all have their part to play in Malmö, making it one of Swedens most cosmopolitan and dynamic cities, with an easygoing, village-like, charm.
For a tour of the citys architectural achievements, the Stortorget, the Main Square and Malmös Town Hall are a great start. Here youll find the 16th century home of the former Danish mayor Jörgen Kock, and the Kramer Hotel, which was built in the style of a French chateau. The equestrian statue, also in Stortorget, is of King Karl X Gustav, who made Malmö a part of Sweden. The majestic church of St Peter (St Petri) dates back to the 14th century and the days of the Hanseatic League.
From the open and typically Scandinavian city center, it is just a five-minute trip by bus to the square of Möllevångstorget, where a completely different world awaits you. Every nationality is represented here, and likewise and international cuisine is served up at the vibrant markets which teems with outdoor entertainment.
Malmö offers a range of concerts to cater to all musical tastes, from magnificent musicals and classical concerts to experimental theatre, big band jazz and poetry festivals. The Malmö Festival, therefore, is not to be missed. Held annually in August, theres one week- or over 900 hours- of free entertainment, winding up with the worlds largest crayfish party, held at the main square and a tremendous fireworks display.
With the opening in 2000 of the Øresund Link, connecting Denmark with Sweden, this sensational seventeen-kilometer-long road and rail bridge has put Malmö on the map as the Swedish gateway from continental Europe.
Malmö Sturup Airport is located 30km south-east of Malmö. It has direct flights to and from London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and other cities. Another option is the busier Coepnhagen International Airport, less than an hour away.
