Mini guide to Maintal
MaintalMaintal is located in the state of Hesse, in the district of Main-Kinzig-Kreis, on the River Main. It is the second largest town in the district (after Hanau), and consists of four subdivisions.
The city was created in 1974 during the reforms, by merging the city of Dörnigheim (now the biggest district in Maintal) with the towns of Bischofsheim, Hochstadt (High City, headquarters of the city administration) and Wachenbuchen (Guard Reserve, the smallest district). In a survey prior to the merger, residents nominated the name ‘Main City’, and it stuck.
Maintal is joined with Hanau and Frankfurt through the ‘northern main railway’, and there are two car ferries that take people and vehicles over the river to Offenbach and Mühlheim. Further, there is a bus line that services the town well.
Dörnigheim is located on the right bank of the river Main, about 13 kilometres to the east of Frankfurt, and is bordered to the north by Hochstadt. It was first mentioned in 793, and was known in the past as ‘Turinchheim’. Being between Hanau and Frankfurt am Main, Dörnigheim was a popular stop for visitors on their way to the two cities, and hotels and restaurants were popular businesses. Dörnigheim received city status in 1964.
Bischofsheim is sandwiched between the rivers Rhine and Main, on the Mainspitze triangle (where the Main ends at the Rhine). Things to see in Bischofsheim include the Town Hall, which now houses the local history museum. The Town Hall is one of the old half-timbered houses, and together with several old churches (including the Evangelical and Roman Catholic churches) these should not be missed.
Hochstadt is the geographical centre of Maintal. It is bordered to the north by Wachenbuchen, to the east by Bischofsheim and to the south by Dörnigheim. It was first mentioned in 846, but it is believed to be much older.
