MainaschaffMainaschaff is a municipality, located in the German state of Bavaria, within the district of Aschaffenburg. It is situated on the banks of the Main and Aschaff Rivers, and was first mentioned in the history books at the end of the 600s. In the 1100s, the town was mainly made up of farms, mainly fruit-growing, and fishers.
Mainaschaff is famous for its Puppet Theatre, and also its Main Hall, which holds many shows by the Academy of Social Education (a training center for teachers in Bavaria), and the singing group Edelweiss Mainaschaff – see if you can’t schedule your trip to coincide with a show!
The Kapellenburg is a mountain with a little chapel, and has been the site of pilgrimage and procession for hundreds of years. There is also an ancient grotto, which has only been opened to the public in the last 100 years or so. In 2005 a vineyard was re-opened too (the vineyard dates back to the 1200s), and the playground on site make it a popular destination for the visitor and local alike.
The Mainparksee is also a well-known spot; formed in the 1950s with the construction of the highway, this large lake (240,000 square metres) is now a recreation area for public use. It offers bike and walking paths, as well as serviced camping spots (no cooking by open fire here!).
Mainaschaff is found on the A3, and is also serviced by bus and train – so the tourist can’t go wrong with travel arrangements. In Aschaffenburg have been found the remains of Roman settlements, and a Roman military camp.
