LandshutThe city of Landshut was founded in 1204 by Duke Louis I. The city witnessed the historic wedding of Duke George with the Polish princess royal Jadwiga Jagiellon in 1475.
Located in the State of Bavaria in the south-east of Germany, Landshut serves as the capital of lower Bavaria. It belongs to both Eastern and Southern Bavaria. Lower Bavaria is one of the seven administrative regions of the Free State of Bavaria, the southernmost and geographically largest state of Germany.
The city is also often called ""Three Helmets City"".
Landshut is Lower Bavaria's biggest city and lies in the center of Lower Bavaria. It's part of the Alpine foothills. The river Isar runs throught the city center. Landshut is about 45 miles northeast of Munich.
The city played a crucial role in World War II. A sub camp of Dachau concentration camp was located in the city to provide labour to the local industry.
Strategic location and a good infrastructural accessibility near the metropolis of Munich and the Franz Josef Strauss International Airport are added advantages of Landshut. The opening of the Munich airport close to Landshut in 1992 enabled business to flourish in the city. This is perhaps the reason that unemployment rates are lower in Landshut as compared to other cities.
With a mere population of over 60,000 inhabitants the city finds its beauty in the Gothic architecture. The major tourist attractions are the historic city center, the Trausnitz Castle and the Church of Saint Martin featuring the world's tallest brick-tower.
Landshut is famous for a festival celebrated every four years called the Landshuter Hochzeit, in the honour of the 1475 marriage of George of Bavaria and Jadwiga Jagiellon.
