Mini guide to Krabi
Located south of Phuket on Thailands Andaman coast, the coastal province of Krabi has some of South East Asias most breathtaking scenery. Towering limestone cliffs covered in verdant forest are dotted all over the area, resulting in some fantastic vistas as you lie on the golden sandy beaches.
Not surprisingly the area is popular and has been well developed, but tastefully retaining the natural beauty of the area. Most the action is location at Ao Nang and Ao Phai Phlong, a strip of resorts along a lovely beach that packs out during the Christmas season. All western conveniences are found here, but it retains a typical Thai character, with endless restaurants and souvenir and cheap clothes shops.
The most spectacular beach on this coastline is found at Rai Leh, reachable by boat only, due to the impassable topography. It too is busy and popular with rock climbers. But many are content to vegetate on the beach and admire the view.
The jewel in Krabis crown is the two Phi Phi islands, which enjoy the most stunning scenery in Thailand, consisting of tower limestone mountains sandwiching sweeping bays of white sandy beaches and turquoise water. The diving here is especially good, but the resorts get busy and pricey.
Krabi town doesnt have a beach but is located on a large river mouth with a promenade and relaxed atmosphere, It is here you can truly appreciate the friendliness and character of the locals, there are numerous restaurants and guest houses, good shopping opportunities and it is generally cheaper.
Within easy drive of Krabi are several intriguing attractions. The Shell Fossil Cemetery is a bizarre coastal landscape formed over the past 75 million years. Wat Tham Suea unusually sits in an overhanging cave beneath a karst butt. An exhausting climb to the chedi on top reveals excellent views. Several excellent national parks are also located in this area.
The nearest international airport is located in Phuket and regular ferry shuttles run to Krabi. Buses are also frequent and reasonable efficient, arriving all the way from Bangkok.
