Car Rental Kingston - Exploring Kingston
The region encompassing Kingston is extraordinarily beautiful, with the rivers of Lake Ontario, the St Lawrence and Cataraqui, meeting at the city. For those seeking outdoor adventure, Kingston and the outlying areas offer many activities.
Not far from Kingston is the Thousand Islands region. The waters here are home to a wide variety of game fish, and anglers flock to the area for the profusion of slippery creatures. Cruises run through the waters, stopping off intermittently at choice islands. One of the islands is the home of Boldt Castle, where boats stop to afford the visitor an inside look at the marvellous edifice.
Another geographical wonder is Frontenac Provincial Park, situated about 45 minutes north of Kingston, near the small town of Sydenham. Here the labyrinthine trails take you over a vast area of verdant forest and pristine lakes. It's possible to canoe the many waterways, and campsites are dotted around the park. Note that the forest is not negotiable by vehicle; therefore, the campsites must be accessed on foot or by canoe.
The pretty town of Gananoque, situated east of Kingston down highway 401, is worth a visit to see the Thousand Islands Playhouse. Those with gambling proclivities can head to the Thousand Islands Charity Casino, located on the way back to Kingston.
Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal are all possibilities for daytrips from Kingston, and each of these cities has something different to offer the visitor. Toronto, two hours to the west, is a sprawling metropolis offers the goods and evils of any major world city; while Montreal, 2.5 hours to the east, is more culturally grounded. The capital, Ottawa, 1.5 hours away, is a more conservative and endearing small-scale city.
