Iserlohnis a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), in the district of Märkischer Kreis. Within the district and the region of Sauerland, Iserlohn is the largest city by population and area. Iserlohn is also home to the district’s Police headquarters. Due to its being covered in parts by forest, Iserlohn has earned the nickname of Forest City. The name is though to derive from Isen (iron) and Lôh (forest).
In 985 the Pancratius (Pancras) church was founded, and is the oldest church in Iserlohn. In 1237 Iserlohn was given municipal rights by the Count of Mark. In 1975, the city previously had been an urban district, and then incorporated the surrounding ex-municipalities of Letmathe, Hennen, Sümmern and Kesbern, and became part of the district of Märkischer Kreis.
But because it is a larger city than most others in the district, Iserlohn still has a special status and this enables it to take on more tasks usually performed by the district. Until well into the 1800s, Iserlohn was one of the largest industrialized cities in Westphalia, and one of the richest commercial cities in Prussia.
In 1868, during the building of the railway, an underground cave was discovered, and some 360 metres have been made accessible to the public. It is truly a spectacular site, with all the stalactites! Definitely not to be missed by the visitor, so make time to tour it before you leave.
The old city walls are still visible in some spots, so why not spend some time walking the old city and trying to find evidence of the walls. There are also several museums and galleries available for discovery for the more cultured tourist. For the more secular, Iserlohn offers many old churches (some dating back to the 11th century), and even some old manors are open to the public.
