Car Hire Hoofddorp Downtown - Mini guide to Hoofddorp Downtown
Hoofddorp is a little town in the Netherlands that has a ton of things that you can see when you go there on vacation. You can see the Batterij aan de Ijweg, the Fort at Hoofddorp, De Eerstelling Windmill, the Gallery de Meerse, and the Historic Museum.
There is a defense line that protects parts of the country and Batterij aan de Ijweg is a fort that is part of that. It was made to be a cheap defensive mechanism and was there for them to use in a quick response to a threat. It is no longer in use, but it has been preserved as a national monument and is open to visitors.
Another fort you can see is the Fort at Hoofddorp, which you will find close to the Geniedijk. It too is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Now it is a monument protected under the UNESCO Heritage scheme, and visitors are not allowed inside. However, it makes for an interesting view.
An interesting building that you will want to see is the De Eerstelling Windmill, which is located in the center of Hoofddorp and is a corn mill. It was built in 1856 and was the first mill in the Haarlemmermeer polder. That is where the name Eerstelling comes from, meaning 'first one'. The mill was in use until 1930 when there became a problem of not enough wind blowing through due to all of the houses that were built around it. It is open to visitors frequently, but openings vary. The easiest way to see all these sites, especially when travelling with a family, is to rent a car.
