Car Hire Holzkirchen - Mini guide to Holzkirchen

Holzkirchen

Holzkirchen is a market town in Bavaria, Germany and is about 30 km from the state capital of Munich. The city was one of the main locations for broadcasting station for Radio free Europe until 2004. Wooden churches are the most populous and they are economically most powerful community of the council.

The city’s past goes to the bronze age of about 1800-150BC. During Roman era the city had two roman roads crossing each other. It was in 1286 that the wooden churches were first introduced into the market. In 1857 the city had its first railway line passing through it.

The city is connected to the S-Bahn road S5, S20, S27 and A8 motorway. There are daily train services to state capital Munich. The nearest airport is at Munich.

The town is situated in a hilly region and comes up to an altitude of 680m above sea level. The city has just about 16,000 residents over an area of 49 square km. The city is divided in to 35 districts is the largest town in the Miesbach district.

The city has a fair number of taxis plying on the roads and is very cheap and affordable mode of travelling within the city. You can also rent bikes and bicycles to get around the town.

The number of churches in this town is one the main attraction for tourists. There no other monuments those are of political or cultural importance in this city.

If you are unfamiliar with the German or other European languages then a guide would be useful to get around the town easily.

The city has a fairly mild summer and cold winters when temperatures go well below 5° Celsius.

Holzkirchen is located in the state of Barvaria, in Germany, in the district of Miesbach (about 30 kilometres from the capital Munich). It is essentially a market town, and the largest market town in the district. In German, Holzkirchen translates to wooden churches, and on the coat of arms is featured a wooden church.

It is believed that Holzkirchen was settled as early as 1800 BC in the Bronze Age, as evidenced by archaeological findings of copper ingots. During the Roman era the town was at the intersection of two Roman roads, and in 1286 featured their first markets. Today, Holzkirchen is a bit of a transport hub, with good rail and road links meaning tourists have an easy time of getting in and out of town.

Holzkirchen was also the location for one of the transmitters for Radio Free Europe, a United States Congress-funded communications organisation broadcasting from 1951. Its official mission statement was ""To promote democratic values and institutions by disseminating factual information and ideas."" It provided news of Western Europe for those living in Eastern Europe. The towers had a strength of 250 kilowatts, and caused a plane to crash in the 1980s. After the fall of the communist block the transmissions were decreased, and the towers were eventually dismantled in 2004.

Barvaria is a region and state in Germany, located in the southern area of Germany, and is the largest state. Its capital is Munich, and it shares borders with the Czech Republic and Austria, and across Lake Constance, with Switzerland. Two rivers flow through Barvaria, the Danube and the Main, while part of the southwest border is formed by the Rhine.

Due to having been independent since 1871, Barvarians have a strong sense of culture and identity, some features of which are remarkably different from those found in other parts of Germany, or even Germany as a whole. Barvarians place great importance not only on their traditions (including their Celt and Germanic heritage, as reflected in the Maypole and bagpipes) but also food and drink (for example white sausage is rarely found elsewhere in Germany) and beer is drunk almost as much as water.
