Herford is a town in the northern part of the Rhine-Westphalia federal state, which is in Western Germany. The town is the capital of the Herford District. The town is located in the lowlands of the Wiehengebirge and the Teutoburg Forest mountain range.

The town has a rich cultural heritage that goes back to more than 1200 years to its current rich and modern way of life. The town was founded in the year 789AD to guard a ford crossing the narrow river of Werre. In the medival the city was a free Imperial.
