The history of the actual town of Heiligenhaus is actually much younger compared to its rural surrounding and settlements such as Abtsküche. A serious separation attempt was tried by Mayor Thomas which tried to divide the city into two.

The town is situated in the district of mettmann at an elevation of 180m above sea level and spread over an area of 27.47 sq. km. It is surrounded by the cities of Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, and Wuppertal.
It is recommended to get around in a car but the city has an extensive connection of metro rails and buses from the S-Bahn stations which all meet at the Town Center making it a quick way to the town center.
Some of the places you need to visit are the city hall which was built in the mid 19th century. The town has 2 good museums which are of historic importance. The Abtsküche museum and the fire brigade museum of the fire brigade volunteers. The 15th century huberteus Chapel is one of the oldest in the province.
