Hamm is a city located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is in the northeastern part of the Ruhr area (in Western Germany), sitting on the Lippe River. The population is approximately 180,000. It has been around this number for a few years, although the early seventies saw rapid growth (from 85,000 in 1970 to 172,210 in 1975). The late eighties also saw some growth, but not near the record rate of the 70s (it went from 171,000 in 1987 to 179,639 in 1990).

The city is very old and during the time of the Black Death (Black Plague) its population was nearly wiped out. A lot of the modern growth is thanks to many of the big companies who have quarters in the area. Major industries include the coal-mining industry, car component industry, steel industry, and chemical industry. The city is fairly large and has several different methods of travel, which help the people move around as well as help the industries transport goods back and forth. Modes of transportation include car, bus, train, canals, and airplanes (Hamm has three small international airports.) Two major roads which intersect in the city are B61 and B63, both which are “federal roads”.

The coat of arms is a yellow background with a red and white checkered pattern in the middle. Hamm, like many other German cities, is twinned with several places around Europe including Bradford in England and Chattanooga in the United States. The city is divided in seven quarters, which are each divided into statistical blocks; the system has some similarities to the borough system of New York City, except that it is a little more split up. Notable citizens from Hamm include Toben Wosik (professional table tennis player), Horst Hrubesch (pro footballer), Ludwig Biermann (physicist), and several others.
