Mini guide to Hagen
Hagen is a German city located in the state of North Rhine Westphalia. It is the 37th largest city in Germany and is only 15 kilometers south of Dortmund. The geography of the city is the reason why it has become so big. Three rivers (the Lenne, Volme and Ennepe) meet the Ruhr River in Hagen. This has made it a prime trade and business location within Germany. Along with the waterways, railroads are a big part of the transportation in Hagen.
The city has been an important rail junction since 1848 when the first rail line opened. There are a few stations within the city and recently a new service called the Essen has opened up (it was created by Abellio Rail). A lot of those rails are for the industries. The local traffic is usually taken care of by the Hagen Tramways, or Hagener Straßenbahn.
The population of the city is currently 200,000. The mining of coal and the production of steel in the area during the 19th century has also contributed significantly to the growth. Textile and paper producing industries also exist in the city. The FernUni Hagen University is in Hagen and is the school for about 56,000 students, which makes it the biggest college in the North Rhine Westphalia state. Not only does the city have many people, but it also attracts tourists with its Open-Air museum, Historical center, and the Werdringen castle. There is also a cave called the Blätterhöhle, which attracts many people after ancient human fossils were discovered in it. The coat of arms of Hagen is a light blue background with a yellow tree on it.
