Car Hire Grenada - Mini guide to Grenada
Located in the southern Caribbean, this windward island is mountainous and lush making it an excellent destination if you seek more than sunshine, sea and sand. It has some very attractive areas and is relatively unspoilt by tourist development.
The capital, St Georges, enjoys one of the prettiest locations in the Caribbean, squashed between steep hills a deep horseshoe-shaped harbour. Its characterised by steep windy streets, Creole atmosphere and colourful buildings. A mix of French and English colonial influence is evident when you stroll about the bustling town. There are fine views from Fort George (1705). At the harbour entrance is the well intact 18th century Fort Frederick.
Most the beach action is found at Grand Anse, which is a series of resorts clustered around a lovely sweep of white sand fronted by turquoise water. Like the rest of the island, the steep mountainous backdrop is ever present.
Exploring Grenadas lush rainforested-interior is a must on the Grand Etang Road which weaves its way northwards. Its a tiring but scenically rewarding drive, which cuts through the Grand Etang National Park, offering some fantastic views and a chance to admire the Annandale Falls. It eventually leads to Sauteurs, a tiny settlement typified by high coastal cliffs. Bathways Beach is a remote, unspoilt, beach on the north coast where you can relax in privacy and admire the views of several startling off shore islands.
Carriacou and the volcanic cone of Petit Martinique are two off shore islands that can be visited and have small settlements on them. Its a good chance to witness local fishing communities that are seemingly unchanged by modernization.
Grenada's Point Salines International Airport receives infrequent flights from the US, London and several more via San Juan, Barbados or Trinidad. There is also a weekly ferry to Barbados.
