Mini guide to Gotha
GOTHA, GERMANYOne of the oldest towns in Germany, Gotha, with its exquisite Baroque gardens, is often described as the richest and most beautiful towns of Thuringa. Dating back to the 18th century, its name was mentioned by Charlemagne as Vila Gotoha (“Good Waters”). It is the capital of the District of Gotha with a population of over 50, 000 people. The highest elevation is 916 meters in the west. The southwestern area of the district is covered by the Thurigian Forest. To the north is Fahner Hohe with its many orchards. The Unstrut River forms a short part of the north boundaries.
Getting to Gotha from the Erfurt Airport is only 13 miles. Car rental is cheap and competitive. Once in town, from sunrise to sunset, dust or dawn, you can stroll through the ‘Alstadt’ with more than 260 pubs and restaurants that have something for everyone. The Town Hall, in Renaissance style, is noted for a richly decorative façade in its north side. The main attraction in town is the Scholoss Friedenstein, the former ducal palace built in 1643-1655. This imposing rectangular structure with low square towers on the corners is Germany’s oldest early Baroque palace. It houses the Museum of Regional History, the oldest preserved Baroque theater in the world.
Gotha is the cultural and historical centre of Thuringia. Its symbol, Friedenstein Castle, the oldest Baroque structure in Germany that houses world-famous collections, can be seen miles around. A Market place surrounded by restored patrician houses with Brogue doorways is a must see, as well as the 13th century Gothic Augustinian church with former abbey. Discover the 1225-year-old ducal seat during a city tour that’s scenic and relaxing. Be sure to add to your ‘to do list’ the Wartbury Castle in Eisenach and Weimar, “the City of Classical Literature, and the Duchess Tea House.
