GOSLAR, GERMANY

A Medieval town, which still has its charm, is Goslar. A historic town located in Lower Saxony, Germany, whose administrative center is located on the northwestern slopes of the Hartz hills. At its lowest level, 175 M (574 ft) near Oker River, are plains with rich clay soils used for sugar beet farming. Situated at the northwestern foot of the Lower-Saxon highland is the Rammelsberg, a mountain whose summit is at 636 meters above sea level. Immediately to the south rises the Hartz Mountains where forestry dominates. Goslar’s highest elevation is 763 meters (2503 feet). The average daily temperature ranges 10 to 19 degrees Celsius with ample rainfall.

After the discovery of silver deposits in the nearby Rammelsberg Mountain, the wealth from silver mining brought Goslar status as an Imperial City. The Medieval Imperial Palace of Goslar was built in the 11th century and became a summer residence for emperors (Henry III is buried in Goslar). By 1980, the silver was exhausted, and in 1988 the mines were shut down.

American Airlines and Delta are two of the major carriers that can get you to Goslar. Once on the ground, car rentals would be a great way to get around. Excellent road links and rail links to major centers serve as major transportation hubs to Hartz Mountains. With A7 and A395, there are two Autobahns/Highways within twenty minutes of Goslar. The Federal highway B6 and B82 converge at Goslar. Buses travel routinely from the rail station to the Hartz Mountains.

The town’s center has department stores, several supermarkets, eloquent boutiques, restaurants, and several hotels and bed and breakfasts. Once a week the farmer’s market is open with fresh produce. Be sure to visit the Gosler Museum, Hartz National Park and the Mine of Rammelsberg, a UNESCO World heritage site; the site of continuous mineral extraction over a period of 1000 years. If you are daring, you will want to investigate the Zwinger Tower and Dungeon.
