Car Hire Goettingen - Mini guide to Goettingen
GOETTINGEN, GERMANYHome to four intercultural gardens that were created to promote social contacts with refugees, immigrants and natives, Goettingen boasts as a great hub for everyone. It is the capital of the district of Goettingen, with a diverse population of about 129, 686 people. Founded between 1150 and 1200 AD. in medieval times, it was once a wealthy town.
Getting to Goettinger is easy. U.S. Airways and other carriers fly into the nearest airport in Hanover, which has regular train connections. Frankfurt International Airport is nearby as well. From Goettingen Station you can take a taxi or bus to your accommodations. If you are brave enough, rent a car and drive there on the Autobahn.
Goettinger is famous for its old university, Georgia Agusta or “Georg-August-Universitat,” founded in 1737; the most visited university in Europe. Like any university town it has developed its own folklore. On doctorate day, post grad students are drawn in handcarts from the Great Hall to the Ganseliesel-Fountain in front of the Old Town Hall. There they have to climb the fountain and kiss the statue (Goose girl); considered to be the most kissed girl in the world. Needless to say, Goettinger is very popular with college students.
Exploring Goettingen is intriguing. Configuration of the streets in the oldest part of the town is in the shape of a pentagon. The Navel square is the centre of the pedestrian zone. It’s not hard to get around in this rather small town because most sights, bars, nightclubs, etc are within walking distance and can be found around the market place. Be ready to walk barefoot in the monasteries, and be amazed by the gothic structures and churches. To visit the Goettinger City Museum or the two professional theaters. Deutsches and Junges, you may want to ride a bike, take a bus or taxi. Lying opposite Goettinger across the Leine River, you might see ruins of the Grona, a fortress that was visited by kings and emperors, but was reportedly destroyed by the citizens between 1323-1329. Look for sunny skies and eastward winds on most days and temperatures around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
