Located in the central southern portion of Germany, Friedberg literally translates to mean “peace mountain”, and comes from a popular German surname. The city of Friedberg was originally founded in the 13th century, and was done so to collect a toll from people wanting to cross the Lech River. From that time, it has certainly grown into a thriving town, and the crest bears the likeness of a mountain with peace lilies and a Christian cross in the center.

The southern part of Friedberg is mostly industrial in nature and features many factories and plants, and the Ray Barracks military base is also located in the same vicinity. The active campus has been around since before World War I, and been expanded several times to its present day state. Visitors are only allowed in certain areas of the barracks since it is still used, and during war time those visitors are rare. Other parts of the city include a large residential sector, shopping and market district, and mixed use areas including office buildings and homes. Because of the large military and industrial population, the cost of living here is affordable with most of the homes and flats in the lower to middle price range.

The climate here is more varied here than in other parts of the country, with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to 68 degrees in the summer months. It tends to get windy frequently and is cloudy a great deal, making for a rather dreary environment. On the brighter side, the surrounding hillside is pretty and is a busy place on the weekends. The local government and administration is currently working on a long term plan to entice visitors into the town and make it attractive for potential residents to settle down. Since there has been a slow reduction in the number of people calling Friedberg home, the city is expecting this will help with the overall economy and prepare it to move ahead in growth.
