Mini guide to Freiberg
FreibergThe city of Freiberg has a population of 44,000, and a history that is documented back to 1186. Located in the Free State of Saxony Germany, it has been known as the mining capital of the Ore Mountains since it’s origin. Geographically Freiberg is located on the eastern border of the country, and the river, Freiberger Mulde runs through the township making it a unique terrain. The worlds oldest university of mining and metallurgy is located here, as is the beautiful cathedral which houses one of the famous Gottfried Silbermann organs.
Other notable landmarks include St. James and St. Peter’s cathedrals, and on a more somber note, a sub camp of the Flossenburg concentration camp was in Freiberg. More than 500 female survivors of the death camps like Auschwitz made their home here in World War II until it was closed in late 1945. It is not uncommon to find visitors who had relatives that were lost, and some that survived, visit this sub camp to seek closure among the ruins.
On a much lighter note, Freiberg is a beautiful place to live and visit, especially with the picturesque mountains as a backdrop. The old town center has largely gone unchanged since the middle ages, and the mining university creates a culture of history and adventure. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can visit the mine and explore what happens during the mining process. If you happen to visit during the end of June, you will be able to enjoy the Bergstadt Festival which features a large parade, entertainment, food, and lots of related activities. The miners come decked out in their fancy uniforms, and tourists enjoy the warm hospitality.
The residents of Freiberg enjoy pretty streets, lots of green space, plenty of shops and restaurants, and moderate cost of living. If you don’t happen to work in the mining industry, you may be employed at the university, the government, or one of the many private businesses. Life here is like the weather; pretty good, and fairly predictable!
