Car Hire Frankfurt - Hauptbahnhof - Mini guide to Frankfurt - Hauptbahnhof

Frankfurt has three major train stations, one of which is the (Main) Hauptbahnhof. This station is one of the busiest and largest train stations in Europe and it is well worth visiting. From the Hauptbahnhof you can catch a train to any destination in Germany. For travelling around Frankfurt itself, the visitor should use the Subway system (U-Bahn), tram or bus.

If you want to go out to the suburbs use the S-Bahn. Single, group, day or week tickets can be purchased. A white capital “U” on a blue background denotes the metro stations whilst the connection leading to the suburbs is denoted by a white “S” on a green background. Trains that go out to the suburbs are checked more frequently by ticket inspectors than trains that connect to the subway, so always ensure that you have a valid ticket before boarding the train.

Tickets must be purchased from a ticket machine before boarding a train as it is not possible to buy a ticket on any S-Bahn, tram or subway. The ticket machines can be a little confusing for the first-time user, so give your self time to work out the instructions. For a single trip into the city press the button marked Einzelfahrt Frankfurt, or for a day return press the button marked Tageskarte Frankfurt. If you are travelling out to the airport press Einzelfahrt Frankfurt Flughafen or Tageskarte Frankfurt Flughafen. If your journey takes you outside Frankfurt you will have to look up your destination on the list provided and enter the code using the numeric keypad. Then press the button for the type of ticket that you wish to purchase, Einzelfahrt for a single and Tageskarte for a day return.

From the Hauptbahnhof you can travel to the suburbs on the S-Bahn to visit their many attractions. Alternatively you could use a taxi. Taxis are widely available in Frankfurt and fares are reasonable as the city is not that large. In the main downtown area there are also cycle rickshaws that can carry one or two passengers.
