Located in France’s Vaucluse department, the town of Orange is reputedly the country’s warmest city, based on temperature averages. Roman remains, considered among Europe’s most impressive, are among the city’s major draws while France’s oldest festival, the Chorégies d'Orange, is held here in July.

The town’s Roman elements, which include the Triumphal Arch of Orange and the Théâtre Antique d'Orange, were declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO in 1981. The theatre, which dates from the reign of Emperor Augustus, is the showpiece and one of the best preserved structures of its kind anywhere in the world.

Annually, the Roman theatre is host to July’s popular Chorégies d'Orange festival. Top opera singers have graced this event with their presence and singing talents over the years, with the likes of Placido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé and Barbara Hendrix among them.

Also worth visiting and located close to the Roman theatre is the town’s museum, a facility housing the largest Roman marble-etched maps ever to be discovered. Standing at 5.9 metres high and 7.5 metres wide, the maps display details of the Orange, Nimes and Montelimar areas.

Orange is a small town which can easily be discovered on foot, but to fully explore the region you will need a hire car.
