Mini guide to Forchheim
ForchheimThe coat of arms of the northern Bavarian town of Forchheim says a great deal about the area. The two trout adorning the crest convey the deep connection to the many rivers surrounding the Franconian region, which once were home to many trout. However, the name Forchheim itself was once thought to be the derivative of the actual German historic name for trout. Ironically, it was discovered to translate as “pine”, but the crest was already set and is the focus of many a debate over German dinner tables to this day.
Forchheim boasts a solid population of 31,000 and celebrated its 1200 year anniversary a few years ago, making it one of the oldest documented towns in Germany. There are many landmarks to visit, especially with regard to churches as there are at least three worthy of a special trip. The local monastery, city hall, and former prince-bishop’s palace should also be on your itinerary. If events are more to your liking, then you will enjoy Theater Days in the late spring, the Old Town Festival in June, Annafest in late summer, and in December “World’s Loveliest Advent Calendar” come to life attracting visitors from around Europe. Travel is easy in Forchheim, and you have many options on how to do it. From railways, taxis, buses, and car, you will have access to many of the country’s larger highways, and Nuremberg Airport is just 30 miles from town.
The town is closely associated to Nuremberg and has struggled in the past 50 years to maintain a separate identity and further the sense of community. Many residents live in Forchheim, but commute to work in Nuremberg, and some do exactly the opposite. While this is common with close cities, Forchheim has seen an abnormally large percentage of their young people go to college, and then not move back upon graduation leaving a growing gap in the population’s age. To combat this issue without damaging the relationship between the two cities, Forchheim has started promoting the lower cost of living, quaint atmosphere, and growing night life for younger residents. This seems to be helping as more young people are electing to stay put, or return home after school and raise their families in the town.
