The area of Esslingen is located in the southwest quadrant of Germany, in Stuttgart, and is first referenced in the year 777. In the mid-thirteenth century, it obtained status as a market city, which brought in residents from all over the country. The region was very fortunate when American troops were stationed in Esslingen, which caused much of it to be spared the damage of World War II in 1945. Today, the city has a residential population of just fewer than 100,000 and is a thriving community with a strong educational base.

The University of Applied Science makes it's home in Esslingen and is well known for the strict standards and high profile graduates. The libraries are grand, and the architecture very art nuveau' in nature. In general, the culture of the city is centered around the University and it's buildings. Each is unique in it's own way and boasts elegant tile work, elaborate paintings and etchings, and stunning stone work and masonry. The cost of living in Esslingen is relatively high, but with amenities within walking distance in many cases, many find it relatively affordable.

Don't be fooled by the educational foundation. There is much more to do in Esslingen than teach, read, or study. Visitors may enjoy the romantic canoe tour on the Neckar canals, or maybe a history of wine country. Museums featuring both modern and medieval art can be found, and galleries feature local and international works to purchase or simply admire. The unique thing about Esslingen is it's modern amenities with an obviously historic flair, which can be seen in the architecture, eateries and pubs, and shops. The free market is a must see, especially for those first time visitors who want a taste of what southern Germany has to offer.

Traveling around the small area of Esslingen is best done by mass transit, although if you are lucky enough to find street parking, we suggest you do so. If you plan on doing a lot of shopping, you will certainly get your exercise, especially if you enjoy the moderate temperatures and climate.
