Enrique Makek International Airport, in David City, is the primary air terminal for the Chiriqui province. The civil airport is the second largest international airport in Panama and is currently undergoing expansion and modernisation.

The airport began life in 1942 when it was known as San Jose Field. It was created jointly by the US and Panama as a means of defending the Panama Canal from threat by the Axis powers. The terminal was used for the training of U.S. personnel as well as Pacific reconnaissance missions. Following World War Two, the air strip was redeveloped for civil use. In more recent years, it developed into an international airport.
