Car Hire Downtown - Eaton Centre - Mini guide to Downtown - Eaton Centre
The downtown area of Toronto would not be complete without the wonderful Eaton Centre to liven it up. When you visit Toronto, make sure you stop in to explore the shops, taste the food and enjoy a day or two. This is the biggest shopping facility and office complex in Toronto and the Eaton Centre downtown provides the number one tourist attraction for the area. This is also considered to be the largest mall in Eastern Canada and the third largest in the country. What makes this mall unique and a must see is the underground network of stores and walkways that form part of its passages. The PATH is an amazing site to see and another reason for visiting this massive complex is the link to the Marriot Hotel building and the largest store in Canada, The Bay which is a chain of department stores.
The downtown Eaton Centre started out as a single store owned by a Timothy Eaton who soon grew the store into the largest chain in Canada during the 19th century. Eventually he owned all the land around the Eaton Store area except for, of course, the City Hall and Holy Trinity Church. The massive building of the modern day mall and complex began in the 1960's and several city blocks were closed and buildings to be demolished included the church and old City Hall. After much protesting, however, the plans were shifted to save the church and City Hall and the current site is north of Dundas Street.
